Tips for Making Veneers Last Longer

Dental veneers are a great solution to many cosmetic dental concerns. Find out how to make them last as long as possible here.

If you’ve recently gotten veneers — one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures — you’re probably excited about your brand new smile. However, there’s a lot that goes into taking care of this new set of pearly whites.

Whether you’ve got a single veneer or multiples, it’s important to take excellent care of them in order to make them last as long as possible. While veneers are a permanent treatment and aren’t reversible, there are still things you can do to increase their longevity.

Because the staying power of veneers rests heavily on how well you take care of them, our team at Wilshire Park Dental Group, located in Los Angeles, California, wants to offer you some tips on how to make your new smile last.

1. Avoid staining foods and drinks

While you may have gotten veneers to cover up stained teeth, it’s still possible that your new veneers can stain as well. In order to keep your veneers pearly white, try to avoid foods and drinks that have known staining power.

Some of these foods and drinks include coffee, tea, red wine, tomato sauce, and berries.

2. Practice good oral hygiene

Veneers require just as much hygienic care as your regular teeth do. Plus, it’s still possible that you can develop cavities even with the veneers. So, make sure to brush and floss twice a day along with using a mouthwash. You also want to use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid doing any damage to your veneers or gums.

3. Take care with hard objects

Your veneers are strong, but they can still break, so you want to take care to keep hard objects from coming into contact with them. With that being said, you should avoid biting directly into crunchy foods, biting your nails, opening things with your teeth, grinding your teeth, and eating large foods with your front teeth.

You also want to wear a mouthguard whenever necessary, such as playing sports.

4. Visit your dentist regularly

Last, but not least, make sure you come in and see us regularly for dental cleanings. We can also make sure that your veneers are in good working order and fix any imperfections or anything else that’s bothering you about them.

Because we use porcelain veneers at Wilshire Park Dental Group, your veneers should last you at least 10 years. They could last even up to 20 years if you follow the above listed guidelines.
